PAIN SHOULDN'T DECIDE WHAT YOU CAN DO.
Maybe your knee hurts every time you climb stairs.
Maybe an old shoulder injury keeps you from lifting.
Maybe your low back tightens every time you stand too long.
Maybe you have burning pain or numbness that travels down your leg and into your foot
Or perhaps neck pain travels into your shoulder or arm.
For some people, the problem isn't one issue in a painful joint or area.
It may involve a combination of the following:
Ligaments
Tendons
Facet joints
Bursae
Spinal discs
Sacroiliac structures
Joint capsules
Degenerative musculoskeletal changes
Irritated surrounding tissues
Mechanical problems contributing to nerve irritation
Instead of simply covering up pain, Prolozone gives us another way to address selected structures that may be contributing to it.
REDUCE PAIN.
IMPROVE FUNCTION.
GET BACK TO MOVING.
WHAT IS PROLOZONE?
Prolozone is a musculoskeletal injection technique combining principles used in:
Prolotherapy
Neural Therapy
Oxygen-Ozone Therapy
The treatment is directed into or around selected painful or dysfunctional musculoskeletal structures.
Depending upon the condition being treated, our Prolozone solution may include:
Procaine
Procaine acts as a local anesthetic to numb the immediate pain caused by the irritating dextrose and ozone. It simultaneously acts as a vasodilator, enhancing local blood flow to flood the targeted ligaments and tendons with the oxygen and nutrients needed for healing. Finally, it resets the local nervous system and reduces neurogenic inflammation, creating an optimized environment for the Prolozone solution to successfully stimulate new tissue growth.
Dextrose
To trigger controlled inflammation at the site of a damaged joint or ligament. This localized stress simulates a fresh injury, which prompts the body to recruit white blood cells and healing growth factors. Ultimately, this response stimulates collagen production to repair and strengthen loose or damaged connective tissue and proliferate tissue growth.
Methylated Vitamin B12
Methylated B12 accelerates peripheral nerve repair in regenerative medicine by acting as a catalyst to rebuild damaged myelin sheaths and stimulate physical axon growth. Additionally, it improves nerve conduction velocity and suppresses abnormal sensory firing to provide relief for chronic neuropathic pain.
Zeel and/or Traumeel
Homeopathic injectable formulations used formulations to modulate inflammation and relieve pain without causing the tissue-degrading side effects of corticosteroids or NSAIDs.Traumeel targets acute soft-tissue trauma and swelling by guiding the immune system through a healthy inflammatory resolution cycle. Meanwhile, Zeel protects joints from chronic degeneration by inhibiting destructive enzymes that break down cartilage, making both ideal for long-term musculoskeletal repair.
Magnesium Sulfate
Magnesium sulfate functions in regenerative medicine by blocking NMDA receptors to relax severe muscle spasms and dampen hypersensitive pain signaling around injured joints. It provides critical neuroprotection and nerve recovery by stabilizing cell membranes and supporting the ATP energy production required for cellular healing. Additionally, it lowers pro-inflammatory cytokines and dilates micro-vessels, improving local oxygen delivery to create an optimal environment for tissue repair.
Medical Oxygen-Ozone
Medical oxygen-ozone therapy is used to trigger a controlled dose of brief oxidative stress that forces the body to upregulate its own cellular repair and antioxidant pathways. It dramatically reverses tissue hypoxia in damaged joints and tendons by improving blood flow and maximizing local oxygen uptake. This intense energy delivery stimulates fibroblasts to express vital growth factors, which actively accelerates the deposition of new collagen to rebuild weak ligaments and cartilage. Additionally, ozone shuts down chronic pain by inhibiting pro-inflammatory pathways without causing the tissue-degrading side effects associated with cortisone injections. Because the gas is highly unstable, it is freshly prepared using a specialized medical generator immediately prior to the procedure.
The precise formulation and treatment locations are individualized according to the patient's diagnosis, anatomy, medical history and examination findings.

YOUR PAIN MAY INVOLVE MORE THAN ONE STRUCTURE
A painful knee may involve cartilage, tendons and ligaments.
A painful shoulder may involve the rotator cuff, biceps tendon, joint capsule and AC joint.
And chronic back pain may involve multiple discs, facet joints, ligaments, stenosis, sacroiliac structures
So, joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and neurological irritation…All at the same time.
This is why we don't simply inject the spot where you point. We will Inject up to 4 to 5 locations around the same structure and multiple vertebrae for the same one price during the same session. We will also examine any imaging you have had e.g., X-rays and/or MRIs to determine which structures to target.
WE LOOK AT THE ENTIRE FUNCTIONAL PROBLEM
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
There is no single answer.
The number of treatments depends upon:
How long you have had the problem
How much degeneration is present
How many structures are involved
Whether neurological symptoms are present
Your overall health
How your body responds
Healing is a Process
That's why our treatment plan is built around two stages.
STAGE ONE
3 PROLOZONE TREATMENTS
Treatment #1
Approximately 3 Weeks of Remodeling
↓
Treatment #2
Approximately 3 Weeks of Remodeling
↓
Treatment #3
Approximately 3 Weeks of Remodeling
↓
RE-EVALUATION
After treatment #3, we ask:
Has your pain decreased?
Has your range of motion improved?
Are you sleeping better?
Can you walk farther?
Can you turn your neck more comfortably?
Is pain traveling down the arm or leg changing?
Are you returning to activities you had stopped doing?
If you're doing well, we stop.
If you're clearly improving but additional treatment appears appropriate, we may recommend another series.
STAGE TWO
UP TO 3 ADDITIONAL TREATMENTS
Some longstanding or degenerative conditions may require up to six total Prolozone treatments.
But you don't automatically commit to six.
WE REASSESS AFTER THE FIRST THREE.
If additional injections appear clinically appropriate, treatments #4 through #6 may be recommended.
The goal isn't endless injections.
The goal is measurable improvement.

SYNERGISTIC COMBO
PROLOZONE + ELECTROACUPUNCTURE
At Modern Wellness, we frequently recommend an electroacupuncture treatment approximately 2 days to a week after a Prolozone injection.
Performing electroacupuncture (EA) after a Prolozone injection is a highly strategic approach because 2 days to a week after the Prolozone injection the inflammatory phase is peaking and performing EA accelerates the cellular recovery timeline.
The specific clinical benefits include:
1. Controlling the Peak "Oxidative Burst"
The Prolozone Effect: Prolozone works by triggering a controlled, temporary localized inflammatory response (an oxidative burst). This peak soreness and tissue swelling typically top out about 48 hours to a week after the injection.
The EA Benefit: Introducing electroacupuncture at this time introduces a localized anti-inflammatory effect. It helps down-regulate the acute, uncomfortable spike in pain while preserving the beneficial growth factors necessary for long-term tissue repair.
2. Clearing Metabolic Waste and Debris
Flushing the Area: As the ozone triggers cellular repair, metabolic waste, dead cells, and leftover lactic acid gather in the joint space.
Micro-Pumping Action: The gentle, rhythmic muscle pulsing from the EA electrical current acts like a local circulatory pump. It increases venous and lymphatic drainage, flushing out the metabolic "debris" from the injection and bringing in fresh, oxygenated blood to continue the healing process.
3. Mobilizing Stem Cells for Tissue Repair
The Prolozone Foundation: Prolozone stimulates local fibroblasts and chondroblasts to rebuild cartilage and ligaments.
The EA Turbocharge: Peer-reviewed clinical research indicates that electroacupuncture triggers a systemic release of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the bloodstream. By performing EA days later, you release a wave of stem cells exactly when the joint tissue is highly active, localized, and primed to absorb structural repairs.
4. Preventing Post-Injection "Muscle Guarding"
Breaking the Pain Loop: When a joint is injected and swells slightly, nearby muscles automatically tighten (guard) to splint and protect the area. This bracing can lead to secondary tension, stiffness, and compensatory pain.
Restoring Range of Motion: Applying EA days later explicitly targets these reactive muscle spasms. Decompressing the surrounding soft tissue ensures the joint stays loose and mobile while it heals.
5. Overcoming Delayed-Onset Soreness
Endorphin Activation: If you have a lingering, dull ache days after your injection, EA targets the peripheral nervous system to release endorphins and enkephalins. This provides a drug-free method to reset your pain threshold without relying on NSAIDs (like Ibuprofen), which are not encouraged after Prolozone because they blunt the regenerative process.
* These EA treatments are separate from the Prolozone package and are recommended according to individual clinical needs. Often EA is covered by your health insurance.
Steven Bennett, DOM, MSOM, Dipl. O.M.
20+ Years of Clinical Experience • Thousands of Patients Treated • Regenerative Medicine • Prolozone • PRP • Electroacupuncture • Neuropathy Care
Steven Bennett, DOM, is a licensed Doctor of Oriental Medicine in the State of New Mexico and a leader in the fields of regenerative medicine, Electroacupuncture, and integrative pain treatment.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Bennett has helped thousands of patients address chronic pain, joint degeneration, nerve irritation, neuropathy, musculoskeletal injuries, and loss of function using a combination of advanced regenerative and bioelectronic therapies.
His clinical focus includes Prolozone Therapy, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Electroacupuncture, Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT), ultrasound-guided procedures, and integrative regenerative medicine.
Dr. Bennett received his Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from the International Institute of Chinese Medicine in 2004 and began practicing in Albuquerque in 2005. Since that time, his work has increasingly focused on finding practical, minimally invasive approaches for patients who want alternatives to repeatedly masking pain or immediately progressing to more invasive procedures.
A Regenerative Approach to Pain
Dr. Bennett has extensive experience using Prolozone Therapy for painful and degenerative conditions involving the knees, shoulders, hips, neck, low back, sacroiliac region, tendons, ligaments, and other musculoskeletal structures.
He also utilizes PRP therapy, including ultrasound guidance when appropriate, to accurately target injured or degenerative tissues.
Rather than looking only at where a patient hurts, Dr. Bennett evaluates the different structures that may be contributing to the problem—including joints, ligaments, tendons, fascia, muscles, nerves, and surrounding connective tissues.
This allows treatment to be directed toward the underlying mechanical and biological factors associated with pain and dysfunction.
Advanced Electroacupuncture
Dr. Bennett has also been a leader in the clinical use of Electroacupuncture (EA).
He first studied Electroacupuncture with Dr. Darren Starwynn in 2006 and has spent nearly two decades refining treatment protocols that combine traditional acupuncture principles with modern electrical stimulation.
His clinical approach frequently combines Electroacupuncture with regenerative injection therapy to address both the structural and neurological components of chronic pain and injury.
Neuropathy and Nerve Pain
Another major area of Dr. Bennett's practice is the treatment of peripheral neuropathy and nerve-related pain.
He uses Electroacupuncture together with Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT) and other integrative approaches for patients experiencing burning, tingling, numbness, hypersensitivity, and other symptoms associated with irritated or dysfunctional peripheral nerves.
A Career Built Around Medicine
Dr. Bennett's medical career began in 1986 as a medic in the United States Army, where he earned the Expert Field Medical Badge.
Following his military service, he studied biology and developed a strong interest in ethnobotany and medicinal plants. He later completed an apprenticeship in Shiatsu massage therapy before pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Oriental medicine.
Dr. Bennett also studied extensively with Dr. Jimmy Wei-Yen Chang in advanced Chinese pulse diagnosis and herbal medicine.
Earlier in his career, he served as a professor at Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, where he taught and supervised students in Electroacupuncture, clinical medicine, and Chinese herbal prescribing.
He also volunteered with programs serving veterans, individuals experiencing homelessness, and people participating in substance-use recovery programs throughout New Mexico.
Today, Dr. Bennett's work is centered on the intersection of regenerative medicine, bioelectronic medicine, and neurological rehabilitation, with the goal of helping patients reduce pain, improve function, and return to the activities that matter most to them.
